Have you ever just gone through something very stressful in your life, and finally feel like things are moving on? Doesn’t it feel like you have a new lease on life? Like you are reborn? Isn’t it so symbolic?

I’m Christian, so I would use the example of Jesus rising from the dead, but I also respect other cultures, so I would also use the example of a Phoenix rising from the ashes.

No matter your personal beliefs, it’s very reassuring to know that things improve, that life will get better, that if you focus at the light at the end of the tunnel instead of wallowing in the darkness of the path that you are traveling, that this too shall pass. Life will go on.

If you are currently on a dark path in life, know that my thoughts and prayers go out to you. I know that it’s a very challenging time in your life right now, and know that I am one more person who hopes for your survival to the light at the end of the tunnel. Share with those close to you in your life of the challenges that you are currently facing so that they can be there for moral & emotional support. Try to get a walking/running buddy or workout buddy, so that you can combat the stress chemicals in your body with a friend. Exercise does far more help than people realize…believe me, I’m a personal trainer!

Today is the day to celebrate the rebirth of Jesus Christ rising from the dead after 3 days of death. If you have other beliefs, let this be your personal day in hopes that you too will be reborn. If you are reborn, let this be your day to rejoice!

How Do You Stay Motivated?

March 28, 2010 6 comments

That’s a good question. I’d like to start things out with a short story. I remember during my first year living in New York, I was dating a girl who was so dumbfounded by my positivity, that one day she yelled at me saying that no one can always be so positive, and then called me fake! It was shocking to me how people willfully decide to live life choosing not to believe that good things can and will happen to them.

Let me clarify to you that in no way do I dismiss the realities of life. Life is rough, and the two things you’re guaranteed to do in life is die and pay taxes. There are real wars, darkness, and evil in this world. Don’t think for a second that the rich get it easy either. The realities of the world are like facets of a diamond. One facet may be rough, ugly, and unpolished, while another facet is glistening with clarity and brilliance. This is just how life is.

To paint a picture for you. Imagine that you are walking on the path of life that is fairly clear, and somewhat lit, and you just tripped. Immediately after you fall, a new path that is foggy, darker, and even has a type of heavy air to it appears. You stand up from your fall, hurt, disoriented, and confused. You now have the choice after your reality has affected you to either take your path that you are familiar with, or you take the path that looks intimidating, and unfamiliar.

Makes it seem like the dark path is not the one that you should be taking, doesn’t it? Well, you see it was not the dark path that caused you to fall, but it was actually the familiar path where you had tripped; it was the comfortable path that you had fallen. After you arise from your fall, you take a step towards the dark path, and the fog actually starts to rise, the path starts to become visible, and the heaviness of the air lessens.

Use this example for your current life situation(s).  There is no right or wrong path, however, when you apply faith and believe in yourself, and decide in your heart that you want to move forward, a new path reveals itself. It’s not an easier path, but it will be more rewarding so long as you remain faithful to yourself and what’s most important to you.

Respect and accept your emotions. When you’re sad, be sad. When you’re happy, be happy. If you need to cry, do it. Don’t hold in your emotions. Emotions were created to help maintain clarity of your life path. If you deny your emotions, or hold them in, you get distracted, and go off course in your life. This holds the same when you abuse your emotions. There does need to come a point of after grieving to accept reality, and move forward. Not accepting reality, and remaining sad about something that is out of your control is the manipulation of your emotions, to repeat the grieving processes over and over again. How does one stop manipulating their emotions? Take steps on a different path instead of the one that you are comfortable with. Change the scenery in your house. Actually get rid of the things that cause feelings of unhappiness. Take a vacation to a place that you have never been to before, that had crossed your mind. Get a new job. Take up a new hobby. Make new friends. The list honestly is endless, but the steps that need to be taken can only be made by you.

How do I stay motivated? Because I choose to let go of what’s out of my control.

Do you need help taking those steps forward?  Email me, and I can make a suggestion, or guide you to the proper people that can assist you. We can’t do it alone. Everyone needs a support circle.

Dream-adj: An aspiration; goal; aim

I dream all the time…all the time!

Sometimes it gets so bad, (bad as in “good,” of course), that I have to tell my heart and mind to chill out so that I can get my work done. Dreaming is healthy though; dreaming is necessary for the livelihood of your existence. Dreaming is a part of living. I’ve had people tell me to stop dreaming and live in reality, but they’re the one’s who don’t realize that a part of reality are the dreams brought to life.

Don’t believe me? The light bulb, the automobile, and the computer were all at one point someone’s dream. Some of the best books and music known to man were at one time someone’s dream. Dreams that come true are the affirmations for believing, and hoping. Be aware of the reality though that some dreams do not come true, but let’s further look at the dreams that did; freedom of human rights, press, and worship. This is why people love New York/America. This is the city/country that gives people the opportunity to work hard to make their dreams come true. I promise that this is not a propaganda piece, but this is a piece to re-motivate your spirit. We are all part of the largest recession of our time, and it has caused so much stress and hardships in people’s lives. People have been losing faith and hope in this country. We the people are what make this country, not the politicians. They are merely stewards of the people. Take responsibility in the fact that you have the power to make change in this world.

It’s time to work towards your dreams. There is no time like the present. Understand this, you must work hard for your dreams; because no one will believe in them except you and the one’s that you love. When you work on bringing a dream to life, it becomes a passion. To read about my article on passion, click here. I could write for hours on how important dreams are, but just remember this, if you don’t work and put forth effort into your dreams, they will never come true.

“There are no limits, there are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man/woman must constantly exceed his level.” -Bruce Lee

Sacrifice = Compromise

February 21, 2010 8 comments

Sacrifice-noun: The surrender or destruction of something prized or desirable for the sake of something considered as having a higher or more pressing claim.

Compromise-noun: A settlement of differences by mutual concessions; an agreement reached by adjustment of conflicting or opposing claims, principles, etc.

In order to make a sacrifice, you must be willing to make a compromise. A sacrifice and a compromise are not the same meaning, but you cannot do one without the other. Someone would say: “But Jose, 1+1=2.”  This is true, but what I’m sharing with you is that the word “compromise” is the “1+1,” and the word sacrifice is the “2.”  Everything you choose in life will require of you to make some sort of a sacrifice, that will simultaneously require of you to compromise your old ways of believing, thinking, and living, that you were once comfortable with. If you try to set any goals in your life, you name it; weight loss, weight gain, relationship, marriage, having a child, new job, quitting a job, etc, these all will require for you to make a compromise, and sacrifice your old ways of living in exchange for a new way of living. Want to change the way that you live, think, believe, and view life? Make a compromise with your “old self” and “current self,” that you both will make the sacrifice to endure the hardships together to create your “new self” .

Love Is The Greatest

February 14, 2010 7 comments

If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophesy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

Prophesy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! Our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! But when full understanding comes, these partial things will become useless.

When I was a child, I spoke, thought, and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything in perfect clarity. All that I know is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God knows me completely.

Three things will last forever-faith, hope, and love-and the greatest of these is love. -1 Corinthians 13:1-13

*How you can relate this passage to your life and fitness;

Our mind, body, and spirit endure a lot of abuse throughout the days with the challenges of life that we face. Examples such as stress, pollution, negative thoughts & beliefs, life, death, suffering, abuse in the form of alcohol or other substances.

The list can go on forever, and a way to see clearly amongst all of these things that cloud our feelings, emotions and beliefs seems impossible. It all starts with loving yourself in a non-selfish way. Examples such as listening to your body when it’s sick or tired. Granted, maybe you can’t stop working, but you can provide your body the proper nutrients and vitamins so that it can continue if you cannot step away from your tasks. Stay away from negative influences that will distract you from your priorities. Listen to music that will inspire you and motivate you to continue to endure. When your work is done, even if you cannot sleep, rest your eyes and mind, by writing to yourself of what you are most grateful for, this can put your mind at a far greater state of peace than just tossing and turning about tomorrow’s worries. When you wake up in the morning, start your day by saying to yourself “thank you” of what you wrote down the night before.

Give it time, and watch how loving yourself in a non-selfish way will spread in every other activity that you partake in. It’s like watching a beautiful flower grow right in front of your eyes. It will not be easy, but it will be beautiful. Know that I write these words not to try to convert you, but to help maintain a balance in fitness of the spirit, mind & body.  Enjoy today’s blog!

Why Endure?

January 24, 2010 5 comments

You may wonder why my fitness blog never talks about “fitness workouts.” To share with you, there is a plethora of information out there on how to do a “squat” or what’s right to eat, what’s not right to eat. You can go to any magazine rack, library, or bookstore and learn how to exercise, even without a personal trainer.

NOTE: It is advised/highly recommended, that when performing any exercises, it is to be performed under the supervision of an experienced fitness professional.

How many of these books or magazines share with you the amount of mental preparation & motivation needed, along with will power, that it takes before enduring an exercise/eating regimen?  This blog is to help those of you that are about to endure, and also those that are currently enduring, in not only exercise & nutrition, but life as well.

Only seeing the “end result” of images fools too many people. Hardly ever is the public given the opportunity to see how long the path is that it takes for people to get to the “end result.” Not being made aware of the sacrifice, dedication, suffering & enduring it takes, causes far too many people to give up too soon.

This is not always the case. Some people do have real health issues that are being taken into consideration, but how do you keep on going even after you “have” been enduring for so long? Some of us have been enduring for years! The question is why endure? In my previous blog post I had stated that endurance develops strength of character. This is true.

People don’t give up because of the enduring. People give up because of the suffering. People stop trying because the suffering is unbearable to them. It’s not when we’re surrounded by those that support us that make it unbearable. It’s when we’re alone with our thoughts and feelings, when we’re tempted by our vices or the weak areas of our will, which make things unbearable…that makes us ask that question to ourselves, “why endure?”

You have to believe with every bit of your mind, heart, & soul (the body will follow whatever the heart and mind decide) that you will come out of this suffering as a better person than you were when you had first started. The growth as an evolving individual will be amazing!

Pressure, heat, and time is what develops a lump of coal into a beautiful diamond gem…and you are far more precious than a small stone. So if pressure, heat, time, & a little polish can create such a piece of beauty…

…Imagine how your life “will be?” It is not a “could be, or should be”…it’s, how will your “diamond” look?

Believe and have faith with all of your mind, heart, and soul that the suffering that you’re enduring for your sacrifice will make you a better person in the end, than when you initially started!

If the suffering is about to be unbearable or is unbearable, give someone you love and trust a call or email. It can be a family member, a friend, a loved one, a counselor, a clergy member…or even your personal trainer 😉
